Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 2 About the Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Leanne and Murray Goldschmidt have been blessed with the opportunity to establish the Tikkun Olam Giving Fund (the Fund) which is administered through the Australian Philanthropic Services (APS) Foundation. Tikkun Olam is a Hebrew phrase that means “repairing the world”. It reflects the belief that each of us has a responsibility to leave the world better than we found it through acts of generosity, service, education and community contribution. The Fund will focus on • Improving society and strengthening communities • Supporting those in need • Creating positive and lasting social impact • Expanding access to education across all age groups The objective of the Fund is simple. Capital contributed to the Fund is invested, creating a permanent pool of resources that generates annual income for distribution to registered Australian charities. In this way, every contribution has the potential to create an enduring impact for generations to come. The Fund operates under the APS Foundation structure, which allows taxdeductible donations to be received from individuals, families and businesses (in Australia). We hope this purpose resonates with you. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 3 Introduction About the Artist My name is Murray Goldschmidt, and this is my first exhibition. After repeated encouragement from people who have seen my photographs and asked me to exhibit them, I am pleased to share this collection with you. My travel photography brings together wildlife, landscapes and encounters with people. I am drawn to the things that make me pause: a gesture between animals, changing light across a valley, or a brief moment in a busy street. The photographs, books and textiles here share some of those experiences. The exhibition moves through three worlds. Together they invite us to look more closely at the lives and places around us—a fitting starting point for Tikkun Olam, the work of repairing and healing the world. The Fund turns that attention into action by supporting people, education and stronger communities. The Wild An elephant raises a cloud of dust; a bird opens its wings. These photographs invite us to notice other lives, from the scale of a herd to details easily passed by. Look for the gestures and encounters that make each animal’s presence felt. The Earth Mountains, rivers and the night sky offer different ways of sensing our place in the world. Light reveals a ridge, water traces a valley, and stars gather above an orchard. Take time to follow their lines and consider the places they bring to mind. The Human Experience A glance towards the camera, hands at rest, a journey through the city. Work, tradition and companionship take different forms in different places. These photographs ask us to notice what makes each encounter particular, and what we recognise in one another.
Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 4 Curated by Saurabh Chatterjee Photographer, mentor and curator Saurabh Chatterjee is my mentor, teacher and friend. He has joined me on three photographic journeys to remote parts of India, where several of the images in this exhibition were made. For years, Saurabh encouraged me to bring my work together as an exhibition. I am honoured that he agreed to curate this collection, even though he could not be here in person. Saurabh reviewed thousands of photographs across the genres represented here. He selected the core collection and advised on editing, presentation and display. I later refined the selection with feedback from a small group of viewers. A widely published photographer Saurabh’s photography has appeared in National Geographic Traveller, Lonely Planet, Time Out Explorer, The Times (London), The National (Dubai), Discover India, FEMINA, JetWings International, Deccan Herald, Deccan Chronicle and Maharashtra Ahead. Take your time, look closely, talk about what you see and return to the pieces that speak to you. There is no obligation to buy an artwork or make a donation. Buying a piece is entirely optional In recognition of Murray and Errol’s birthdays, artworks purchased at this exhibition are offered at genuine production cost. Murray is not making a profit from these sales. This event-only pricing will not be available after the event. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 8 The Wild Lives that share our world Enter a world that carries on whether or not we are watching. A young animal stays close to its family; another pauses, alerting to something beyond the frame. Each photograph offers a brief glimpse of a life with its own rhythms and concerns. Stay with an image long enough for the first impression to change. What seemed to be a pattern, suddenly becomes two individuals. A powerful body reveals a tender gesture. Even a small creature can command our full attention. This is an invitation to be curious about lives beside our own. The care at the heart of Tikkun Olam begins with noticing that we share the world, and allowing that knowledge to shape how we live in it.
Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 9 ARTWORK #1 | THE WILD Crossing Together In the Kruger National Park, roads are part of the animals’ landscape too, providing routes through the terrain. Here a young elephant walks close beside its family as they cross together. Warm light reveals the folds of their skin and the differences in scale between them. What might otherwise be a simple road crossing becomes a quiet picture of belonging, held in the small animal’s position within the group. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 10 ARTWORK #2 | THE WILD Side by Side The stripes of a zebra are individually distinctive, much like a fingerprint. Bringing these two faces close together allows their differences to emerge within a pattern that initially seems continuous. The fine grain of the coats, the direction of the stripes and the small details around each eye reward a slower look. It is an encounter that moves between two recognisable animals and an almost abstract arrangement of black and white. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 11 ARTWORK #3 | THE WILD Stripes in Profile The younger zebra’s closeness to its older companion gives this encounter a feeling of reassurance. Their profiles overlap, carrying the stripes across the frame in an intricate meeting of lines. Look longer and the separate faces become clear again: the curve of each muzzle, the upright manes and the small differences around the eyes. The photograph holds both the visual complexity of the pair and a gentle impression of companionship. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 12 ARTWORK #5 | THE WILD At the Edge of the Mist For a short time at dawn, the mist gives Kruger a softened, almost private atmosphere. A waterbuck stands among the grasses, its face turned towards the camera while the woodland recedes behind it. The mood is fleeting. As the sun rises and the air warms, the haze disperses, distances become clearer and the day takes on a different complexion. The photograph preserves that brief interval before the transformation. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 13 ARTWORK #6 | THE WILD Out of the Haze These two wildebeest were preparing for what became a brief scuffle in the moments before sunrise. Their lifted legs and the space between them bring a restless energy to the pale clearing. The encounter was short-lived, as was the atmosphere around it. With the sun’s arrival, the mist began to lift and the landscape shifted into daytime, bringing a different set of demands. Black and white holds the tension of that passing moment. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 14 ARTWORK #7 | THE WILD A Cloud of Dust The elephant’s curled trunk sends dust over its head, setting a fine cloud against the weight of its body. Look closely at the tiny hairs along the trunk, the creases in the skin and the particles suspended in the air. Dust bathing helps elephants care for their skin, providing protection from the sun and insects. Here that familiar behaviour becomes a meeting of contrasting textures: tough skin, smooth tusks and dust light enough to hang for an instant. This bird rests at the tip of a bare branch, its colours ranging from soft lilac to turquoise and deep blue. The quiet background leaves room to notice each transition in the plumage. Its poised stillness also conceals the possibility of sudden movement—a reminder that a patientlooking bird may be watching with considerable purpose. Along the riverbank, birds like this Pied Kingfisher watch from branches before launching rapidly towards a possible catch. This photograph records the instant of departure. The suspended pose reveals the spread of the feathers and the balance of the body, making visible a movement that is difficult to study with the unaided eye. Patience provides the opportunity; the shutter preserves the instant. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 17 ARTWORK #11 | THE WILD Leaving the Perch Caught at the moment it leaves its perch to forage, this lilac-breasted roller reveals colours that are less obvious when its wings are folded. Turquoise and deep blue spread across the open sky, while the slender branch records where the movement began. Rollers take their name from their rolling aerial displays, but here the action is a departure in search of food. The photograph turns that brief transition into a sustained view of the bird’s form. Here the animal is recognisable without a glimpse of its patterned coat: its silhouette is enough. The setting sun brings the scene into a simple arrangement of gold and shadow, with grasses marking the ground below. It is also a moment of transition. Day and night bring different dangers, and this familiar beauty exists within that continuing rhythm. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 21 The Earth The places that hold us Some places make us fall quiet. Here, a distant horizon or a sky full of stars can draw us beyond the scale of our daily concerns. These photographs hold moments when a place and its light came together, never to appear in quite the same way again. Let your eyes wander through the scene. Imagine the air on your skin, the distance to the farthest ridge, or the stillness before the sun appears. A photograph cannot transport us completely, but it can give us room to pause and feel the pull of somewhere else. As you enter this world, consider a place that has stayed with you. That sense of attachment gives care a beginning: somewhere particular, remembered and valued, within the Earth we all call home.

The setting brings together features that can seem unlikely companions: high mountains, desert sand and a luminous night sky. In the foreground, wind has drawn fine ridges that the eye can follow almost grain by grain. Beyond the dark horizon, the Milky Way offers an entirely different scale. The photograph connects a small pattern at our feet with the immense distance overhead. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 23 ARTWORK #17 | THE EARTH The Sky in the Water Shego is a small village in the Spiti Valley, close to Kaza and surrounded by stark slopes and the river landscape. At night, a shallow stretch of still water becomes another surface for the sky. The reflection draws the distant glow down between the mountains, while scattered stones interrupt it with details close enough to touch. The photograph rests on that contrast between the immense setting and the quiet, shallow water at its centre. Consider what life might be like in the small farmhouse on the right. Their blossoms speak of the growing season within a landscape often associated with bare mountains and cold. Above them, the Milky Way rises beyond a dark ridge. The photograph brings those two experiences together: the close, seasonal life of the orchard and the extraordinary depth of a clear Himalayan sky. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 25 ARTWORK #19 | THE EARTH Beneath a Boundless Sky I made this photograph at 2:20 am on a clear night in Langza, with the temperature at −14°C. Hands could leave their gloves only briefly before fingers became too cold to work comfortably. Changing camera settings began to feel like operating a remote control with chopsticks. Yet the sky made the discomfort worthwhile. The Buddha’s bright colours and decorated base anchor the scene beneath the Milky Way, surrounded by snow-covered slopes and a night far larger than the human effort needed to record it. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 26 ARTWORK #20 | THE EARTH Circles Above the Village This image combines 287 exposures, each lasting 30 seconds, made between 9:36 pm and 12:45 am. Stacking the photographs reveals the stars’ apparent paths around the northern celestial pole as the Earth rotates. Their natural colours, influenced strongly by surface temperature, become more noticeable along the trails. Earlier that day, a snowstorm had swept through the valley and threatened our plans. By nightfall the sky had cleared. The result records both the passage of time and the remarkable speed with which Himalayan weather can change. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 27 ARTWORK #21 | THE EARTH A Ribbon of Gold The warm light behind the Lamayuru Monastery lasted only a few moments. While the white buildings and more distant peaks remained in shadow, the setting sun found a narrow stretch of folded mountainside and lit it gold. Soon it would disappear behind the surrounding heights. The valley would then take on a different character beneath the stars. This photograph holds the brief balance between the illuminated earth and the shadows already gathering around the monastery. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 29 ARTWORK #23 | THE EARTH Mountain in the Light We camped beneath Gonbo Rangjon overnight to photograph the sky. A full moon made some night photographs more challenging, but the transition between setting sun and rising moon gave the peak a striking glow. The night was bitterly cold. Staying in tents, we were looked after by the couple who managed the campground. Those small shelters at the mountain’s base carry that memory of welcome, while also showing how sharply and dramatically the rock rises above them. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 30 ARTWORK #24 | THE EARTH Built into the Mountain Phuktal Monastery is built around a natural cave in the remote Lungnak Valley of Zanskar. Its buildings gather against the cliff above the river and are accessible only by an approach on foot through the rocky gorge. The trek there is part of the experience of reaching it. In this photograph, the monastery initially seems almost absorbed into the mountain. Gradually, white walls and small windows separate themselves from the surrounding stone, revealing the careful human presence within a formidable landscape. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 31 ARTWORK #29 | THE EARTH At the Water’s Edge The figure on the pale outcrop is our tour leader and photographer, Manish Lakhani. From this spot at Köl-Suu, we could watch eagles soaring above the lake. The brilliant water sits within a narrow mountain gorge, and placing one person at its edge gives the scene a human measure. The ledge offers a momentary foothold for the eye before it moves out across the water and up towards the enclosing cliffs. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 32 ARTWORK #30 | THE EARTH Drifting Above the Pyramids A sunrise balloon flight offers a different perspective on Teotihuacan, northeast of Mexico City. The pyramids become part of a wider landscape of trees, buildings and open space, their scale set against the slow movement of other balloons. Pale, warm light softens the distance. The photograph preserves the sense of drifting through the scene, with each colourful balloon marking another small group of people looking down on the same extraordinary place. Tikkun Olam Giving Fund Exhibition 33 ARTWORK #32 | THE EARTH Weather Through the Valley The pale sweep crossing the valley is a snowstorm, moving quickly towards us on strong winds. From this position we were still ahead of it, with the dark mountain slopes and braided river visible beneath the changing distance. By the time we returned to our campsite at Shego, the grass was glistening with fresh snow. Black and white gives the weather a physical presence, holding the moment when a familiar view was about to be transformed. The temperature reached −14°C, but the night revealed one of the most extraordinary displays of stars I have seen. The high-altitude setting brings water, bare slopes and lingering snow into close contact. In this view, the shoreline curves through the foreground and leads towards the deep blue lake, while patches of white break up the surrounding ground. It is a landscape that feels poised between seasons, recorded during a pause in the longer journey down from the mountains. Here, sunset draws warm light across the tops of the surrounding cliffs while shadow gathers in Blyde River Canyon. The changing tones separate one ridge from another and carry the view towards the horizon. Standing above the canyon, I was struck by the scale of the scene and the way a brief change in light could make its familiar shapes feel newly revealed. There were no animals at the water that morning. The landscape itself was enough: a windmill, overhanging branches and a narrow stretch of still water holding the sky. For a moment, the scene seemed almost outside time. It remains a reminder that the light of sunrise can take your breath away without another subject entering the frame. Mist softened the landscape and concealed what lay farther ahead. The road seemed to lead into the unknown, inviting the familiar question of what might be waiting around the next corner. Fine branches divide the glow overhead, while the ground fades into shadow. It is a photograph of a particular sunrise, but also of the anticipation that accompanies an early drive through Kruger. We can see a face or a gesture, yet much of the story remains beyond our reach. That space invites us to wonder, and to approach each person with curiosity and respect. In these streets and homes, life unfolds in fleeting encounters. An arm around a friend, a solitary figure or the movement of a crowd can stir a memory of our own. Elsewhere, a detail asks us to look beyond what feels familiar. Move through this world as a guest. Allow each encounter to stand on its own before deciding what it means. Tikkun Olam finds expression in how we meet one another; even the simple act of giving someone our attention can be a beginning.

Two people sat together on a green bench, enjoying the view and apparently unaware of the alignment taking shape from where I stood. The shared seat provides a small centre within the open landscape. For a brief time, the figures, the weather and the broad sky came together without anything needing to be arranged. He sits on a donkey and looks towards the camera, with the track continuing away behind him. The encounter was brief, leaving much about his life unknown. It also holds a moment of recognition between travellers, in a landscape that will be more familiar to him than it was to us. The birds’ outspread wings extend the shapes of the horses and their riders, giving the group a remarkable presence. Eagle hunting is part of the cultural heritage of Kyrgyzstan, practiced by hunters often known as berkutchi. The photograph captures the immediate encounter: broad feathers, controlled movement and the close physical coordination between people and animals. Public sightings of the Geisha in Japan are increasingly rare as their numbers are in decline and they conduct their work in very private settings. Their patterned green kimonos stand out against the softly lit buildings, while their shadows carry the movement forward. The photograph preserves the passing encounter without needing to interrupt it. Lamps, clothing and the receding street give the scene its atmosphere, and invite the eye to follow the figures into the evening. The reflected scene complicates the geometry around the escalator, making the lone figure seem to emerge from an unknown space. Look closely at the repeating patterns in the masonry and the way the curved handrail crosses them. I placed the camera in the small gap between the wall of a water feature and its falling droplets. Water close to the lens became a soft curtain of reflected light, while the woman and the surrounding street remained in focus beyond it. Balancing those layers was technically demanding. The resulting photograph holds both the clarity of the passing figure and the luminous uncertainty of the foreground. Her expression remains partly hidden, allowing the encounter to retain something of its mystery. The man’s direct gaze is confronting, while his hands rest loosely between his knees and the wall and pavement surround him with texture. We do not know his name or history, and the photograph cannot supply them. What it can offer is a moment of attention. It is the kind of coincidence that street photography can find in an ordinary journey through the city. Curved mirrored surfaces distort and layer the passing street scene. I released the shutter as the reflection of a grey hat reached the edge of a crescent-shaped mirror, its profile echoing the curve while overlapping another reflected figure. Deep red binds these fragments together. The complexity comes from timing and viewpoint: separate elements briefly align into a composition that disappears as the women continue along the footpath.
