Public sightings of the Geisha in Japan are increasingly rare as their numbers are in decline and they conduct their work in very private settings. Their patterned green kimonos stand out against the softly lit buildings, while their shadows carry the movement forward. The photograph preserves the passing encounter without needing to interrupt it. Lamps, clothing and the receding street give the scene its atmosphere, and invite the eye to follow the figures into the evening.
