While the white buildings and more distant peaks remained in shadow, the setting sun found a narrow stretch of folded mountainside and lit it gold. Soon it would disappear behind the surrounding heights. The valley would then take on a different character beneath the stars. This photograph holds the brief balance between the illuminated earth and the shadows already gathering around the monastery.
