Without a shared spoken language, we communicated through gestures. I photographed the instant she raised her hands to cover her eyes. The patterned clothing, beads and textures of her hands give the portrait considerable detail, even as the gesture conceals the feature we so often look to first. Her expression remains partly hidden, allowing the encounter to retain something of its mystery.
